Rockwell’s iconic illustration for Look magazine was originally a large oil painting produced in 1964 depicting a six-year-old African-American school girl, Ruby Bridges, being escorted by four U.S. marshals to her first day at an all-white school in New Orleans following the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling for school desegregation. The original is on permanent display at the Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. This collotype print captures a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement of America and the atmosphere of the day. The composition is arranged so that the viewer is at Ruby’s height, seeing the scene from her perspective adding to its impact.
