The Queen of Harts and the Knave of Diamonds, become shields for enormous armor scaled figures that cast leaning shadows into a barren landscape, marked with classical perspective lines. In this work of art, the Queen holds a poppy, symbol of dreams; the Knave's Pinocchio-like nose is supported by a crutch, to Dali a symbol of reality. As the enchantress-queen flees to a mountainous blue horizon, tiny Alice, with her lengthening shadow, skips undaunted away from the towering figures. A powerful, mysterious work, its sky emblazoned with Dali's signature and with 1968, the year that Dali embarked on the magnificent Wonderland series.
