Neuland's charming 20th-century oil on canvas depicts a cosy farmhouse interior with a roaring fire and various utensils. One of a series of his fireplace paintings, similar but from different angles and with different emblems included. In this painting, Neuland focused on detailed execution of the chair and the basket and the nuance of each plate displayed on the mantel. His realist depiction of a farmhouse kitchen as part of a series is outstanding. The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a sturdy woody frame.
Hendrik-Jan Neuland (also known as Hendrik-Jan Nijland) was born in Hengelo, Holland in 1928; he died in 2009. Neuland painted landscapes and flower pictures. In the second half of the 20th century he achieved success in the German market, represented by art dealership Wissing; for the German market he signed his works H. J. Neuland. His paintings delight a large circle of art appreciators and friends in Western Europe. Neuland trained with the noted artist A.J. Zwart, one of the major artists of the Hague School. Neuland painted in a very similar style to Zwart and they both produced interior scenes featuring the same fireplace from various angles.
