Stadylmayr's smoky browns and ochres create the mood in this tavern with wood objects filling the space. The oil painting centers on three men ending their day, engrossed in their stories with a fourth figure leaning in and an attentive dog close by. Stadlmayer's light comes from the top of the staircase in which these subjects have no interest in going towards.

Stadlmayr was born in Munich, Germany in 1915. He studied in the Munich Academy and attended the Hein Konig School in Munich. He ventured on study trips through several European and non-European countries to paint. Eventually, he made a career as a film director.
