Artist: Amery Lobel Riche (1890 -1950) French
Title: Lunch for Three
Medium: Charcoal on Paper, Signed in charcoal, lower left
Size: 22” x 19.5" Framed
Lobel-Riche looks in on a somber Parisian lunch. There are no signs of the passionate or erotic undertones characteristic of many of his drawings. However, his main character is still a woman in this formal family scene. She is both mother and wife, and her face shows a tension surrounding lunch with her family. Lobel-Riche masterfully presents facial gestures and body language in every tableau he creates, recording the details of life of the times in charcoal. Beautiful double mat and frame.
Born to French parents in Geneva, Switzerland he lived in Montpelier. His art was usually characterized by latent and overt sensuality, being known for his sensuous and elegant depictions of girls and women that truly made his mark. He is widely recognized for his images of elite society during the “Belle Epoque” as well as his numerous book illustrations. Lobel-Riche studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montpelier, and then under Léon Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Alméry Lobel-Riche was a giant in the world of French print-making.
