Dickinson’s St. Augustine landscapes are iconic. In this original oil painting Fort Matanzas, one of the most recognizable buildings with ancient and “slaughterous” origins, creates immediate interest. The fort is perched on top of a grassy hill and flanked by willowy palm trees. His rendering of the coquina walls with the lookouts on each corner is masterful. A hint of the inlet shows to the left of the scene evoking thoughts of the danger from attacks it was built to defend. Signed lower right.

Charles Dickinson, a Connecticut native now making his home in Florida, grew up in a family of artists. He began drawing in early childhood. Later he received four years of informal training at the Paier School of Art in Hamden, Connecticut , and earned a scholarship at Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Old Lyme, Connecticut where he studied painting and sculpture. He has dedicated his life to the study of painting and has been a plein air artist for over 40 years.
