Artist: Ernest Fiene (1894- 1965) German

Title: City Lights (Madison Square Park), 1932

Fiene shows his skill in producing etchings capturing the nuances of New York City life. Through clever use of light, dark and negative space he creates towering city buildings which dominate the scene even from the background. Such is the power of New York City architecture. Overshadowed by the city, are the characters walking the city streets and spending time in the park. This “City Lights” etching is impactful and finished in an ornate brushed silver frame with marbled mat.

Ernest Fiene was born in Elberfeld, Germany in 1894. He began studying art seriously at the age of 12. He fled the army draft at age 17 by moving to the Netherlands and then the United States, studying at the National Academy of Design, Art Students League and the Beaux Arts Institute. . In 1923, he had his first solo show at the Whitney Studio Club. He was commissioned to do a vast 2000 square foot mural for New York’s High School of Needle Trades containing over 200 figures.
