Renoir was a prolific, self-taught artist, creating 4,000 paintings and 25 etchings in his lifetime. His first etching, La Danse a la Compagne was based on his 1883 painting. With adults being a popular subject of many of his paintings, he focused on children in his etchings as seen in Le Chapeau Epingle, creating them primarily as illustrations or frontispieces for books. While some foxing bespeaks the age of this etching, it is matted in a pale blue velvet and presented in a period wood frame.
